Certifying your Bungalow is the first step to access the benefits of the program.


Energy Savers Grant 1 | Energy Savers Grant 2 | Energy Efficient Appliance Voucher | Restricted Income Grants

A matching grant of up to $1,000 is available to homeowners of HCBA Certified Bungalows for the restoration or replacement of approved windows and doors.

Guidelines for the Energy Savers 1 Matching Grant

Apply for the certification of your Historic Chicago Bungalow. Only owners that have certified their bungalow with the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association are eligible for the incentives.

ALL of your EXTERIOR rehabilitation plans must conform to the Historic Chicago Bungalow DESIGN GUIDELINES. Your entire project must receive design approval from the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association BEFORE WORK BEGINS . Materials & labor qualify for funding.

WHAT IS ELIGIBLE

  • Restoration of original wood windows

  • Restoration of stained glass window

  • Restoration of original wood windows and the inclusion of double pane glass

  • Capping existing windows

  • Original wood door restoration If paired with new energy efficient storm door

  • Replacement windows and doors

  • Storm windows and doors

HOW TO APPLY

Submit:

  • Member number and address of certified bungalow
  • Cover letter detailing your project. Specify location of improvement. For example: “replacing three double hung windows on the side of home.”
  • Contractor specifications and/or contractor quotes.
  • Name of contractor representative and phone number
  • Current picture of the front of the home (within the last 30 days)
  • Pictures: 
    • For windows-hand drawn sketch that includes grid pattern;
    • For doors-picture from a brochure
  • Architectural drawings (if adding a dormer or addition only)

Failure to include all of the requested information will result in a delay of grant approval. After information is obtained by the HCBA, you will receive notification of design approval, in writing, within approximately 10 business days.

Begin rehabilitation work AFTER receipt of design approval letter.

REIMBURSEMENT PROCESS

Upon completion of your approved rehabilitation project submit to the Historic Chicago Bungalow Association:

  • A copy of your HCBA design approval letter
  • A copy of your HCBA bungalow certification letter
  • The grant application form received with the HCBA design approval letter
  • A detailed copy of your paid in full receipts and payment documentation (copies of cancelled checks, copies of bank or credit card statements)
  • Energy efficient documentation (if restoring existing wood windows this is not necessary)
  • 2-3 photographs of new improvement and one photograph of full front facade (Include your name and address on the back of each photograph )

Failure to include all of the requested information will result in a delay of grant payment. Please note that if doing a piece meal rehab project all information MUST be submitted together. The applicant is eligible for one grant submittal only. Faxed information will not be accepted.

After the receipts and support material are reviewed, if eligible, the grant funds are sent directly to the homeowner. Please allow 90-120 days for grant processing.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Rehabilitation work executed before the home is certified as a Historic Chicago Bungalow is not eligible for grant funds. Work executed without design approval from the HCBA is not eligible for the Energy Savers Matching Grant.

  • Certified Bungalow Owners can now apply for and receive both the Energy Savers “1” and Energy Savers “2” Grants. If you have applied for and received one of these grants, the other grant is now open to you. However, please note that these grants are not retroactive.

  • All street-facing exterior improvments completed after certification must meet the Assoiciation's Design Guidelines, regardless of whether those projects are grant funded, in order for the homeowner to remain eligible for HCBA financial incentives.
