On two sunny Saturdays this summer hundreds of families visited the 6400 block of South Fairfield Avenue to view the newly renovated and restored Green Bungalows. Prospective buyers stood shoulder to shoulder with current Bungalow owners who came from across the city to tour the remodeled homes. Everyone discovered dozens of innovative design ideas and saw how cost effective materials can help update Historic Chicago Bungalows for modern lifestyles.
These four Bungalows were creatively restored with cost saving, environmentally friendly technology. They were each tailored to a different user. One home is a handicap accessible, with a special entrance for a wheel chair, lowered light and electrical fixtures for easy accessibility, and widened doorframe for convenience. Another bungalow was outfitted with a home office, including its own entrance, skylights, kitchenette and bathroom separate from the rest of the house. A third lofted bungalow is designed for young professionals with vaulted ceilings and a spacious bedroom and bathroom upstairs. The fourth home was a restoration of the classic Chicago bungalow.
While these bungalows were each renovated very differently, they all include cost-saving materials and designs that the visiting Bungalow owners were able to take back with them to their own home. Mayor Daley, who presided at the official opening of this event said, "These bungalows are wonderful examples of how adapt these beautiful historic homes to modern lifestyles in a way that retains the character of the homes while reducing energy costs and protecting the environment."
Back by popular demand bungalow enthusiasts will have another opportunity to view the 4 models. On Saturday, August 24, from 10am 3pm the homes will open to tour. Parking is available at Hope Lutheran Church, 64th and Washtenaw and St. Rita Church, 63rd and S. Fairfield.
