Research the History of Your Bungalow
Our Bungalow Brief outlines the process of how to research the history of a bungalow.

Creating Chicago Bungalow Historic Districts

The Historic Chicago Bungalow Association, with funding from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, is now working with community groups (block clubs, neighborhood associations, community organizations, etc.) who wish to nominate their bungalow neighborhoods for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The HCBA will provide guidance and technical assistance throughout the process, which includes:

  1. Establishing boundaries for the proposed historic bungalow district using the guidelines established in the Chicago Bungalow Multiple Property Designation.
  2. Photographing and mapping each property within the district and establishing contributing and non-contributing structures.
  3. Researching the history of the neighborhood and creating a database of historical information on each bungalow.
  4. Preparing the written nomination.
  5. Presenting the nomination for approval to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks and the Illinois Historic Sites Advisory Council.

This process generally takes at least 4 to 6 months to complete, depending upon the size of the proposed district. The HCBA encourages community organizations to work with their alderman when taking on projects such as a National Register nomination.

If your community group is interested in working with the HCBA to prepare a National Register nomination for a bungalow historic district, please contact Emily Ramsey, Project Director with the HCBA, at 312-642.9900 or eramsey@chicagobungalow.org
